Dr Annette Murphy

Annette has provided lectures in general Nursing at WIT since 2009 both as an outside lecturer and has been previously employed as an assistant lecturer in 2013.

Annette was involved in the provision of teaching experience over a four year period from 2003-2007 involving facilitation of the ‘Respect Project’ following intensive training. This was a joint venture involving Crisis Pregnancy/ HSE for second level students throughout schools in the South East in the area of sexual education and expression.

Annette has provided lectures provided for the Civil Defence & the Order of Malta on obstetrical emergencies.

Annette’s research area involves woman-centred care and links with midwifery-led care, referral pathways/ access to midwifery-led care and alternative health care to enhance well-being both during pregnancy and in general.

Annette has just graduated with a PhD by Research, funded by the HSE involving antenatal care services for low risk pregnant women.  Annette has attended presented at over 10 national conferences and 2 overseas conferences as part of the dissemination process involving her PhD.

Annette has currently submitted a funding application with the Irish Research Council to publish her PhD research findings and has submitted a funding application to the WIT PhD scholarship programme 2015.

Annette has practised as a general nurse/midwife since 1985, and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Maternal and Child Health in 2009. Annette’s midwifery role involved the development of a midwives clinic in 2003. In addition, Annette’s role involves the facilitation of antenatal education sessions for prospective parents-to-be.

Annette’s role as a midwife has involved the following initiatives:

• Initiation and provision of a midwifery-led clinic since 2003
• Initiated education sessions for teens at youth café ‘Squashy Couch’ in 2004.
• Preparation of the antenatal education section of the annual maternity report.

Annette has co-ordinated three successful antenatal education day seminars for antenatal education facilitators in the South-Eastern area involving recruitment of outside academic speakers and interagency collaboration. Annette has had the responsibility for training-up midwives in the practical skills involved in facilitation of antenatal education sessions since 2005.

Annette was student representative on Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Committee (REIC) during PhD candidature from 2010-2014.

Annette is a member of the RCNME midwifery education committee since it’s foundation in 2010.
