Is there a more formative time than your first few weeks of college? Granted, it will pass in a flash, but play your cards right during this period and you'll be set up for success throughout your time at SETU.
We’re here to cut through the noise, so take these tips on board to breeze through your first weeks (and years) at university.
Join a club or society
The benefits of joining a college club or society are endless. From making friends to discovering new interests and even building confidence, many will argue that investing your talents and time into a club or society is one of the most rewarding things you can do at third level.
Attend fresher’s events
The first few weeks at uni will undoubtedly be your most formative. Though it may seem a scary prospect, putting yourself out there at SETU’s countless Fresher’s Week events is a great way to meet new faces. Just be yourself!
Familiarise yourself with your timetable
Get familiar with your college timetable if you want to ensure a stress-free first semester. It’s a good idea to walk around campus and check where your lecture rooms are located to avoid that last-minute dash to your next class.
Get to know your housemates
If you’ve lived with the same people all your life, moving into a new house in an unfamiliar city with people you’ve never met can be overwhelming. Get to know your housemates as soon as you move in. It’s worth reminding yourself that as everyone is in the same situation. You, like your new housemates, will be eager to get along and have the craic with this newfound freedom.
Explore the city/town you’re studying in
Where’s the best coffee spot? Where’s the coolest music venue? What’s the fastest bus to college? Answer these questions by exploring the neighbourhoods around our campuses in Waterford, Carlow or Wexford once you’ve accepted your CAO offer. Having a decent grasp of where everything is before starting college will help you feel at home in a jiffy.
Learn about our student support services
SETU has so many support services on offer. It doesn’t matter if it is your first day or your final week, we’re at hand should you need assistance. Pick up our Student Information Booklet when on campus and learn about our Laptop Loan Scheme, counselling service, maths support, and much more.
Set up a student bank account/budget
Every cent counts as a student, so when an institution offers a free service – we’ll take it! Many banks offer free student current accounts which can be a small, but helpful saving. Better still, budget your money for the week on a Sunday night. This will allow you to figure out how much you need to put aside for rent, food, and those all-so-important nights out.
Take care of yourself/establish a routine
And finally, make sure to get enough sleep, eat well, and take time to relax. Tick off these three must-dos and you’ll approach every college day with a clear head. If you can find the balance between work and fun, you will make the most of your university experience.
